Exotic, like the music below!

Exotic Bird!
Exotic Music!

See that exotic bird to the right?

You probably know it’s a peacock, but what you don’t know is that I’ve chosen it as a visual image to go with the exotic music that is part of this Singing Mastermind Homeschool Music “Listen and Move” activity.

Normally, I would tell you what the names of the music pieces are, but I am not going to do that because I want you to discover something about music that involves more than the facts about a composer or any particular piece of music.

In short, you are going to do something a bit unusual and maybe even odd.

What is that odd thing?

Listening without your ears

Listening to music without using your ears!…uh, sort of.

I can almost hear you saying, “Listen to music without my ears? Whaaa….?”

How To Listen “Without” Your Ears…Sort Of

  • The “sort of” part is that you will use your ears to hear the physical notes of the music, but you are also going to listen to it with something deeper inside of you that happens because of those physical sounds.
  • You are going to listen with your entire body and let it tell you the way it wants to physically move when it hears the music.

Have you ever listened with your body before? Sounds odd, doesn’t it?

Technically, of course, your ears are part of your body. And I could tell you the science behind all of this, but that gets us back into the facts about music rather than what you are going learn from your body with following four pieces of music by Stravinsky.

4 famous pieces of music by Igor Stravinsky

A Few Questions For You

  • How did your movements change when the music changed?
  • Which part/parts of your body wanted to move?
  • Which part/parts of your body did not want to move?
  • Were you ok moving without anyone seeing you move?
  • Were you ok with other people seeing you move?
  • How free did you feel moving your body to the music?
